Default 2009 Silverado ... another flipped Manifold build

Last Update:

3/21/2016 IT RUNS! ...

3/22/2016 ... final setup

********

So I just bought this truck but was getting annoyed at the constant rattling on the steering column because previous "custom" build put the turbo on the Driver side and; since it was a stock manifold build, had some "creative" use of space around the power steering and steering shaft/column.

Not a big dollar build 'cos it's already got the platform done. The truck already has a built bottom end, SuperVic, turbo cam, mildly worked heads, 4L80E and is lowered 4/6, frame notch and airbags to assist if towing...

A check of the turbo showed that there was a ridiculous amount of shaft play which also made the turbine hit the housing and bend the fins ... Initially, I wanted to rebuild the turbo so I was looking for a replacement until it came back, but then decided to just get the ON3 78mm after reading how many have had success with it; the price was also a factor. I can get the Precision turbo re-built and not have to worry much about the truck being down. However, after some thought, and the fact that the truck was suffering from a lot of oil leaks, I just decided to rip it all apart and build a flip kit and mount the Intercooler in front and re-use as much tubing as possible. So everything came out...(pics don't show intercooler, which is still mounted behind air dam).

I don't know what the fabricator was thinking when he made this charge pipe..

Build pics to follow...

So after some searching and reading, decided to go down to 2.25" tubing for the crossover. This causes a slight reduction in tubing diameter coming out of the flanges, but I'll try to smooth it out on the inside.

After debating the mounting location, and how much needs to be relocated or replaced with aftermarket (expansion tank, etc.), decided to run the turbo sideways like in a twin-turbo setup. This also allowed the compressor discharge to line up exactly so the charge pipe can pass by the radiator and onto the intercooler ...everything's tacked in in place for the obvious re-design as things progressed.

and the routing continues...

New Turbo came in!

Crossover pipe almost done, left a bit of a gap to put in a flex and a V-band clamp for easy removal. Also, working with these angles and the bends to make the merge for the flange was a pain in the ***! It'll be "multi piece" for sure, and not a perfect two tubes merging, lol

Then started salvaging some downpipe from the old kit to build the new kit...

This is as far as I got today as my son fell off his bicycle and I had to take him in, lol

Cant wait to see how this one turns out, and how the on3 turbo works out for you. I installed one of their 76mm's on a mustang a while back and had good luck with it so far.

looks good!
