Thinking about buying a ford
i've never owned a ford or diesel so some info would be nice. I got a good deal on a 2004 regular cab f250 super duty with a diesel. My question is what kind of diesel is in it the 7.3? what kind of mileage does a stock powerstroke get? and how reliable are they, think it's got 130K on it. Thanks alot guys.

it could be either engine. there were some early 04's with the 7.3L still. as for the 6.0L it could be hit or miss. we have seen some with no problems whatsoever and others that were a nightmare.

most of the ones that i've seen, especially 03-05 were in the shop. a friend of ours has an 03 with the 7.3 powerchoke in it with a bad transmission. the truck has approx. 75k on it, and ford won't fix it under warranty, so he tried to trade it in to get a different truck (dodge or GMC can't remember) and they offered him 6k for trade in value. IMO, they are horrible trucks and i would never buy one. i'd probably never buy a ford anyway; or a newer GM vehicle either
invest in a duramax or a cummins. we've got two duramax trucks and have had no problems with either one.

If built early 04 it will have the 7.3 later in the year it changed to the 6.0 I have own a 03 Fx4 Supercrew Shortbed, had it from 120,000 miles to 230,000 + miles and the only problem was the crank sensor gone bad and a high pressure oil line busting! Besides Normal Wear on parts. 17 mpg on the Highway. I own an 05 Fx4 Supercrew Dually now (bought it with 37,000 now it has 78,000 miles) one year I've own it the intercooler pump went out and three injectors so far. I get about the same on mpg on it

My dad owns a 2004 F-350 dually and so far, it's had a transmission solenoid failure once, but no other problems with about 110,xxx on the clock. It gets about 16.5mpg with him driving. With me driving, hwy mileage is typically over 18, but still falls short of my old 7.3L in that category.
I've never seen(or heard of) a 7.3L in a stock 2004 or newer and I can't find any information related to Ford having used that engine in a 2004, so I really doubt the one you're looking at is anything but a 6.0L. In fact, I don't recall any F-250 in 2003 getting a 7.3L, though I know they used it in the F-350 that yr, so it was probably available in the 250 in '03.
Personally, I prefer the 7.3 because it got better mileage(in the F-350 I owned) and had enough torque to do what I needed it to do. Plus, the 7.3 was a great engine by 1995 and is still considered one of the best engines of all time, whereas the 6.0L probably never will be. The 6.0 is strong, but if you're looking for performance alone, I wouldn't bother with it and instead would go to the Duramax or the Cummins... or the new 6.7L monster(which I'd leave alone).
honeycutt... If your friend opts to have the transmission repaired, with that low mileage he'd probably get an offer of over 10K on trade unless it's in pretty rough condition, and that's if it only has the diesel engine and is a "XL" model short bed standard cab... Vs 6K, it's worth fixing.

I would stay away from an early build 6.0, they are notorious for having major EGR and Turbocharger issues. If you must have a Powerstroke, than a 99-2003 7.3 is your best bet. They are reliable as hell, just dont expect to make more than about 350-400 horses without replacing major components like con-rods etc. Im not going to openly brand bash because it just isn't cool. Every truck has their faults. If you would like to know anything specific, just PM me.
