Javman - Whoever told you that about the rods and RPM is a very smart person. I've tried to convince people that the rods in Gen 2s are snapping, which is a sign of stretch caused by piston speed, not overpressure caused by detonation. Keep the revs down, the motor will live. IMO.

Also IMO, if you're looking for reliability, you need a '01-newer truck. My '00 was a heap. Stayed at the dealership. VERY disappointing. They worked most of the bugs out for '01 - except for that inconvenient plug-launch problem, which took them a few more years.

i have a very knolagable circle of frends (ase cert. master techs and old school muslecar racers) the cars we usuly play with (amc and pontiacs) have very stong bottem ends but will fly apart at 6500 to 7000rpm am curently bulding an amc 401 nitrous motor with the stock forged rods and crank all i plan to do is shotpeen, polish, and full float the rods and run 9:1 comprasion and 300 shot of nitrous. ive seen an amc 401 run 12.5:1 compression with a 250shot live 3+ years spinning low rpm but also stock 8.5:1 compression motors try to run 7500 pluss rpm and blow up on the second or third pass
