who builds engines these days?

On the subject of old vs new I will say that there IS NOT much difference in the basic mechanics in tolerances, machining and clearences. If you try to power hone a gen3 block just like you would a gen1 without caution an open mind to cyl growth with heat in the machining process etc.... you will have problems with the machining. As far as bearing clearances, they are really no different than a gen 1 that i've seen and built. They use the same rod brgs and 98% of the after market forged rods are gen1's that have pistons made with the gen1 .927 wrist pin (gen3 come with .945").
There can always be a weird or unforseen issues with any engine build, the only difference is how the builder handles the issue. IMO if an old school reputable engine shop sends an engine out with improper clearences in an engine then they are probably not really a good shop. But there are always many sides to any story.

If I was to have an engine built, I would either go with Texas-Speed or have Jason that builds them for Thunder build me one. This is only becuase I have seen the outcome and longevity of motors built by these two.

HKE will be doing mine when the time comes. TRT in Arlington uses them and Erik (at HKE) knows his stuff from what I hear.

yeah tell me about it! Although, i can't take all the credit, i couldn't have done it (as quickly anyways) without wkdivr and quik. But your right, engine swap should be cake compared to what i went through after the wreck. It was a ton of work but i learned alot along the way for sure. One of the things i learned is that i never want to replace a frame again on any vehicle.

I would recommend W2W they may be more than some other shops but they do quality work. Plus which ever shop you have do your motor make sure they have already done a LSX block before because I remember Kurt on tech posting that they needed special girdles or plates for honing the LSX blocks compared to normal LS1/LS6 engines. All the engine building is done by Billy Briggs just call and ask for him.
