Default reliable turbo 5.3 bottom end

Hey all, melted a piston 1200 miles into being turbod. I was only on 9psi dataloging for an email tune that apparently was not solid enough for freeway pulls.
Anyway. The block looks very much unhurt, and I’d like to do a rebuild with the goal of making arround 600rwhp and lasting 20k + miles. Some racing, some daily driving, and a tiny bit of towing.

I was originally going to go gen 4 rotating assembly but if I can build a stronger bottom end for a few grand id like to go that route. Any suggestions?

already have heads, and a boost cam so I’m hoping the 600 number comes at arround 11psi or somewhere conservative.

For the price, you can't really beat the GEN 4 rods depending on where you get them from.

I'm not an expert on pistons but at this point you may as well go with a good aftermarket one instead of tossing in new stockers.

The crank can go untouched, that is not a weak point. I don't see this costing a crap load of money unless you get shafted at a machine shop if you decide to bring it to one.

I was a believer in Gen 4 rods until we bent 2 recently... They will hold up to at least 15 PSI on a good tune up. Go over 20 PSI and it's a guessing game.

Wiseco has forged pistons for the 5.3L and you can get some forged rods. The crank will be the next to go...

Several vendors have the parts your looking for.

RPM Speed has some really good prices on that stuff.

The OP is only shooting for 600whp, so that's well within the tolerance of stock IV rods provided the fueling is right.

I am sure gas being at least a year old and the 21+ PSI Boost spike didn't help... Besides the 2 rods being bent everything else looked good.

I wasn't even there when it broke.

Also never seen it shorten the rod in the direction of the pin. Rod bearings and mains where perfect though. If it wasn't for the stupid #2 and #4 cam bearings, I wouldnt have taken it all apart either.

Fortunately I had most everything in stock already... except the replacement rod and piston. For that, I had to dig in someone else's scrap pile...

My stock rod and piston loved being over 600 wheel. But if your buying new ones, take a look at LJMS 5.3 rod and piston kit.

Did you change anything or was your setup an entirely stock bottom end?
