Default LS1 crank

Is an LS1 crank really the same as a 5.3L crank?

Ls1 cranks are gun drilled, and the truck 3.622 cranks are solid. At least from what I've seen.

bobweight is a little different too cause of the larger bore/piston of the ls1 over the 5.3

So theoretically an LS1 crank can be used to stroke a 4.8L ??

Yes, with the stock length non-floating pin rods from any other Gen III, you could use the LS1 crank with your stock 4.8L pistons to basically build a higher compression 5.3L. I would have the rotating assembly rebalanced when mismatching components however.

Good to know, thanks. If I were to do this tho, I would find some 5.3L rods and pistons tho cuz I'm not crazy about high compression....I like boost.

If going to all that work why not bore the block out to make it a Iron ls1 instead of a hi comp 5.3?

The only reason I see to do it would be for a bucks down build if you already had the parts lying around. Replacing the pistons, yes I would go ahead and bore it out to stock LS1 size if the particular block would take it. For a build that needs it, there isnt a substitute for forged pistons; however for a decent upgrade over stock truck pieces, even stock LS1 hypereutectic pistons are slightly better than the factory cast pieces and if picking up all the pieces from say a damaged LS1, you could build an iron version without the re-balancing.

I had stock 5.3 crank in my ls1. The ls1 crank that came with my ls1 was no good.
