when deleting DoD on a 5.3 why is the 4.8L valley cover needed? that is the only thing I am unclear of in this post. Other write ups I've seen haven't mentioned an issue with the valley so I'm curious. Thanks

the dod valley cover has oil passages and solenoids attached to it, you'll see when you take it off and look underneath. you need to block those passages and eliminate the solenoids with the Non dod cover.
