Unhappy 09 5.3l Engines almost expired.

Well I went to the dealer agin today. As some of you know I have had a oil cunsuption issue with my 09 GMC 5.3l thay tryied to fix it twice with valve cover ect. Now on this last visit thay said it burnt 1 1/2 quarts of oil in 1200 miles. Thay said thay will now fully rebuild the engine soon when the pistons and rings come in. And if the rebuild dont work thay said thay would put a new long block in. I hope this rebuild will fix the issue for good however I think I will now have a for sale sign on the truck when its rebuit and look for a 6.2L or just waight for the 2014 modle trucks. what say you guys about the rebuild will thay do a good job at a dealer?

I've got a friend that has a oil consumption issue, something like a quart every 3k.

I agree. I would have liked a long block right away instead of just a piston ring job I just don't see this as a permanet fix. Afm is a true failed gimic that makes no mpg gains what so ever and ruins the good reputation the 5.3l has for it self.

That really does suck. Too bad GM continues to do its "beta testing" on paying customers instead of getting stuff sorted out BEFORE it's been on the market for a few years.

We wish you the best of luck!

There is a oil consumption bulletin out from GM.All your dealer needs to do it look it up.I work at a dealer and have seen this on a few of the 5.3L.

I too had the oil consumption on my 07 5.3. They installed the oil deflector in the oil pan and replaced the valve cover 8000 miles ago. It still used oil. They replaced all of my pistons and rings 2000 miles ago and havent seen a problem yet. I talked to the tech and he said that without the deflector oil shoots onto the bottom of the pistons and gums up the rings. Once this happens the only real fix is to replace the pistons. The tach said that my pistons and rings were all gummed up sith oil and after they replace the pistons they havent seen any of them back for oil consumption.

My 07 has about 50K on it and I havent had any issues yet but with the powertrain nearing warranty expiration I have considered doing the DOD delete in the near future to prevent this from happening. I hear this is associated.
