Installed a cam and springs April 2018. 800 miles later I'm Replacing the noisy lifters ( squeaking) in a 260k miles 5.3 in my 2000 Silverado 1500. Do I need to replace the cam too? Lobes look skuffed.

 

They look good to me. That is normal roller marks for a camshaft if you ask me.

You'd want to replace the cam if the top of the lobe or parts of it looked like this. Often the roller on the lifter would be messed up too.

 

You state they are squeaking? If all the rollers are intact and there is no visible damage to the lobes it could also be an indication of a spun cam bearing.

This can cause a squeak or squeal sound along with low oil pressure issues.

I also recommend inspecting the rocker arms and push rods. It's not uncommon on high mileage engines for the tips on the pushrod to wear as well as egg shape the cup end of the rocker.

 

I'll get the other head pulled and report.

Brick- oil pressure is 40lbs at idle via the factory guage.

life is in the way, haven't been able to get back into the garage to pull that other head yet.

 

other head has been pulled. lifters don't look bad and roller tips feel smooth. bodies of lifters show a little scuffing but this engine has 260k. nothing stands out to me as to the cause of the noise. no smoking gun as i had hoped.

next up, i'll work on pulling the cam and look at the cam bearings. if the cam bearings look good i'll have to pull the engine to check the rod and mains?

Normally i'd agree but the engine has developed a squeak and i'm trying to find the smoking gun. unfortunately i'll have to look at all the cam bearings. I had hoped it was coming from my lifters but they looked/felt fine.
