I don't think $1200-$1300 is going to buy you much of anything good, follow Flyer's advice and keep saving.

Skip the rockers and just buy a cam with the lift you want. Skip the heads and put the money towards a 6L motor. You'll have more power from idle on up with a cammed 6L vs a heads/cam 5.3.

Damn way to shoot down my plans!!! j/k this is what i made the post for. i was thinking about doing a motor swap but, with the skill level i am at with motors i dont think i could pull off a motor swap. and i dont want to pay to have it done. i have found some deals on a lq4 for around $800-$1000 im not sure what condition they are in though. all i really need is the bottom end right?

all im really trying to accomplish is low/mid 13's with the head/cam/ and 100 wet shot. im sure down the road it will escalade into more, it always does.

you can get away with spending ~1600 for some nice heads and a cam installed on your 5.3 If anyone can get me a 6.0 at that price with a cam Ill by 12 from them. Im looking at doing the same thing you are Im still deciding on milled ls6 style heads or going with the stock heads just done over. Just to give you an idea you can get completely done up heads from patriot stage 2 comes with gaskets and bolts, and milled to where you want for around 1300 thats brand new with no core. If you really want to get out better by the parts seperate and take your heads to a machine shop, then get a custome ground cam; installed Im planning on getting out under 1100.
I just bought a book titled How to build hi-po chevy ls1/ls6 v-8's by will handzel go to amazon 14.00 dollars shipped and it will answer any and all your questions. I just got tired of trying to decipher BS from knowledge. Im shore everyone is trying to help and Ive gotten great advice from this site, its just some of it is innaccurate.
Rock on
