Default Need help milage question

I need help. I need to know if there is a way the dealer can pull actual millage off my new truck. I just bought it a month ago from a private seller and the millage just doesnt seem right for the problems I'm already having. I bought the truck as is with no warrenty from a private seller. Its an 06 with an odometer reading of 41K. When i bought the truck it had new brakes and tires. Ive had the truck for 3 weeks now and the tranny is slipping. It sounds really early for a half ton with a 5.3l and no hitch to alredy go through a tranny. Is there any way a dealer can check an internal millage reading to see if there was dash tampering or something? I dont know. Any info would be great.

There has been speculation that vehicle mileage is stored in more than just the cluster but so far I have not seen anyone confirm this. Your best bet would be to talk to a dealer directly.

As for the brakes, 41k would not be uncommon interval for rear brakes IF your truck has rear disks. I am not sure when they switched back to drums. I did my rears(disk) at 46k and still have 45% or so on the fronts at 71k miles.

Silly question, but have you checked the fluid level in your tranny? See if the fluid smells burnt.

Could also be the person raced everything with wheels, and did lots of power braking to kill the tranny.

I used to drive rather aggressively with my acura integra, and I could go through brakes in 20K miles. Mind you I ran the twistys alot to go see family and alot more just for fun.

So it can be done just depends on whos driving, and how they drive. My current truck my brakes are not really worn, and my stock tires almost made it to 50K miles.

I have always wondered if the mileage was kept in another location due to the fact that it would be simple(but illegal) to purchase another odometer with less miles. But I'm going to assume that the mileage is correct and that the previous owner might had abused the transmission and truck. Do you live in a location were there are long and hot summers because without a transmission cooler you transmission has two strikes against it. With new brakes being put on at 41k that would also confirm the suspicion of the previous owner being hard on the truck (or might have done it to increase chance of sell). I'm at 61K+ on original disc brakes front and rear(05+ was rear drums).

Sounds like he beat the hell out of the truck.

They went back to rear drums in 2005.

The direct answer here is no. However, they CAN check warranty history for you(provide them the VIN). Example; let's say a previous owner had a GMPP extended warranty, and had a u-joint replaced 7 months ago at 78,775 miles. The repair made, the date and mileage, all are on file. You can also look at all of the dates & mileages and form a "time-line" to see if your truck's mileage seems accurate. I suppose Carfax would give you the same information, as well as any insurance claims made with the truck.

Interesting how many people don't investigate a vehicle before they purchase it, isn't it?

Are you positive on that? Are you a mechanic at a dealer or something? Just asking.

even if you talk to torque wrench on here he can give you a pretty good run down of whats been done to the vehicle, Before i bought my Duramax i had the car fax report, the Alberta registries report, the gm service report, and had the dealership do a inspection on it focusing on the engine and transmission, and i havent had that truck miss a beat at 110 miles
