Default A few new truck n00b question

The last truck i had was a 95 tahoe, so i'm really not versed in all the computer controlled stuff on these trucks, particularly the way the transmission is controlled.

Case in point, i was attempting to "shift" to see what it would do, shifted to 1st, slowed down a little, and the thing shifted into 2nd! When i hit WOT it wouldn't even shift down. I guess that's why my truck feels so slow. Is this something that a ordered tune or custom tune could fix? If anyone knows what i'm talking about please chime in.

If you want your truck to stay on the same gear... you need to get a Transgo shift kit.

Your truck should shift down no matter what... maybe its your tune?

transmissions are electronically controlled... so ya the tune will help, but as far as selecting what gear to be in on the column.. the shift kit will allow you to hold in gear longer (but not past the PCM controlled shift point)

what MPH are you looking to try to go WOT for it to drop into 1st? I think stock if your going like 35 or below and you punch it it'll drop into 1st.. but any higher like around 40ish it'll drop into second.

Well i had shifted into 1st but had to wait on a truck up ahead, so i couldn't go WOT. I slowed way down, probably around 40ish. I was amazed cause i didn't know it would just shift to 2nd. Once it went into 2nd tho and i finally went WOT at around that speed, it wouldn't go lower. I could be wrong on the mph but i know it's something the camaro never did. It just would not pull at all, almost like i was towing something.

If you have 3.42s, gunning it @ 30mph works best.

ya... i always wondered tho.. on a stock tranny, is it okay to shift on the column.. or even a mildly built tranny (servos/shift kit/cooler)... is it okay to shift on the column? I do now.. but i have a hefty rebuild.

I'd rather not do it, i wish it had a Drive and an Overdrive like the 4l60e's in F-bodies, where Drive draws from a different shift table and overdrive is very conservative.

Plus it's not like a stock 4l60e with a 5.3 ahead of it in a 4500lbs+ truck is gonna last through a stall anyway.

What do i need to get before i can get a mail-order tune?
