Question New Clutch and Flywheel Question

Hey All,

First of all, Hi. I'm Brandon and I love the forums. I've got an 89 C2500 with an NV3500 in it(not the factory trans) and currently the stock 305.

This is my first time doing a clutch replacement.

Swapping in a 388 SBC with about 400 crank hp and I have a question about flywheel size and clutch size. The trucks have larger flywheels from the factory but is there any downside in using a slightly smaller flywheel to have more options as far as flywheel choice goes?

The NV3500 has the same 1.125" 10 spline input shaft as many other GM transmissions, is there any downside to using the smaller flywheel and thus smaller clutch diameter in a heavier vehicle application. The truck weighs about 4200 pounds with me in it.

Also, will I be able to keep my existing starter? Going from a 14" flywheel to say an 12" is there going to be issues with my starter engaging correctly or can I even use the smaller flywheel at all?

Any help or advice is appreciated! Thank you!
