Anyone hear anything lately about this truck. I just read it will come in a Crew Cab w/5.3 liter V8 and 3.08 ring and pinion gear ratio. Anyone hear anything else.

Low gears don't all ways mean better mileage, motor needs to operate in a range where it has the power to efficiently move the truck at desired speed.

 

What? 70mph on the interstate @ 1600rpms wont cause constant downshifting in and out of OD? But the Corvette can do it!


Oh ya, the Vette weighs half as much but has double the power with only a fraction of the wind resistance.

 

I have a GMC RCSB WT with the 3.23 gears, and have always gotten the same MPG if I am in drive or overdrive. With a slight advantage going to drive by about .3 mpg.

This has held up quite well through each mod I have done as money came available.

An old neighbor of mine had the Chevy version of my truck, and his MPG was practically the same with 4.11 gears.

I would go with the cylinder de-activation over my 4.8 if I could do it over, but I feel by the time I am done with my truck I should be averaging over 25 mpg highway.

Currently I average close to 22 Highway, and I still need headers and a tune. Also I keep about 500 pounds of various tools, and junk in my truck for work so I am not running light to take advantage of that aspect.

 

Jesus. 3.08? You'd get WAY worse mileage in the city.

I recently put on 31.5" tires from 30.1" tires. The switch effectively makes my 3.42s 3.31's. There is a HUGE difference on the highway in terms of being able to accelerate up hills in 4th and such. It's much more sluggish. And that's with an LQ9. I can't even imagine how shitty a 3.08 with a 5.3 would be. I'm switching to 4.10s (which would be like 3.90s with my previous tires)

 

My 5.3L ECSB has 3.23s and had 30.5" factory tires. It was fine around town and definitely able to spin the tires from a stop. On the highway at 60mph I was able to get 25mpg. Going 80-90mph I was able to average over 18mpg.

It seems that changing to shorter and wider tires has hurt my mileage. I knew that going in, but it hasn't been THAT bad.

 

My S10 gets 24 on the freeway, BUT about 14-15(maybe more/less) in the city with 3.08's. Not for sure about the city mileage, because I am only half a tank into testing city mileage, and it isnt looking pretty. My city test is with minimal pedal to floor moments.

Yes I think it will be offered only in crew cab or ext. cab. They are badged as XFE (Same as the cobalt, stands for eXtreme Fuel Economy). It will come with the aluminum 5.3 and the 6-speed transmission. GM also decided to use the front end off the hybrid SUV's. They idea is that GM already has these thinks laying around, why not use them to increase fuel economy (average of 1 mpg high/city).
