I suppose you could buy the cable from GM but i think it is rather expensive. I just replaced the positive cable on a 3800 mailbu at my dads shop and i want to say it was around the $100 just for the cable......

Go to a welding shop. They should have anything from 4 gauge to double ought(sp) gauge. I upgraded my cables to double ought which I got for free. My dad and I work on tractors and depending on the one they might use a cable anywhere from 6 inches to 12 feet long and are prone to wearing through. I just cut a good section out of the old cables and use it where I need it. For terminals I use brass solder on cable lugs. You can get them at a welding shop as well. Always always solder. Never crimp.
And yes an OEM cable will be rediculously expensive.

He doesn't mean the solder is brass. The terminal is brass. You can go to a good home supply or hardware store for this wire(Lowe's, Home Depot,Ace). It expensive, but no where near $100.00. Get large brass terminals and as was already recommended solder them. Be SURE you make a good solder joint. Don't heat the solder. With 4 gauge wire and large, thick terminals you'll need a lot of heat before the solder will flow. Heat the terminal and wire thoroughly before applying the solder. When properly heated the solder should flow and be shiny when in a molten state. Don't skimp on the solder. You need not only a good electrical bond, but a good mechanical one as well. You might want to put the wire in a vise with a shop rag wrapped around it to hold it in the proper position for soldering.
