What mods to a stock airbox
#12
You can remove the baffle on the intake tube (large removable baffle on bottom beside radiator. Then replace it with a paint cap. Take an old grinding wheel or cut off wheel and remove the ridges inside the airbox. Make it smooth so air flows better across the box. Port and polish the throttle body, by-pass throttle body and remove the egr with a block off kit. The block off kit might cost 14 shipped from speed inc, and the bypass kit is a few bucks off ebay. I dont know how much bypassing the throttle body cools the air charge, but I would imagine removing the egr cools it slightly as well as allowing more airflow.

I have already bypassed the coolant lines and it was free, being that it is an 04 I don't have EGR to block off. If I cut the air box behind the headlight and sealed it to the core support with foam would that be good? Maybe cut a hole in the bottom of the box and put a 3 or 4 inch PVC with an elbow to pull the air from behind the valance. Would I need to block off the opening to the fender in all of this?

The box is definitely a restriction. On the dyno I picked up 10 rwhp by bypassing the airbox. But it may have been exaggerated because the truck was stationary with no air flow (there was a huge fan blowing of course). I think the best bet is just an open cone filter.

how do you bypass the airbox? im new to this site and still tryin to figure it out so bare with me plz hahaha. i have an 2001 silverado ext. cab with the 4.3 V6 and im tryin to squeeze as much hp out of it as possible. if it works on my truck, i will also do it to my 08 infinity G35. it has dual airboxs and intakes on the damn thing! double the power gain! hehehehe

ok what i did with my airbox is i cut out a large hole in the front of the box right behind the headlight. noticeable difference. improved throttle response and a little more hp. i just run during the day with my headlight taken out, then at night i pop it back in.
