Default VHP 44 cam(210/218) installed.. impressions

well i finally got the 210/218 .531 114 cam in the 04 5.3 ECSB 4x4. I put some ls6 springs on there(.550lift) and comp chromemoly pushrods. Only other mods right now are the volant and dynomax dump before the rear axle. ASM's go on in a few days along with ls1 fans and a nelson tune since i need the nelson tune to make my fans work

anyway... idle was lopy.. it idled fine for the first 30mins. Now it surges when i rev or put the truck in gear. Im gonna have to get nelson to edit my idle someway but its not idling to extremely well. Sounds awesome, but it cant handle the almost stalling when in gear. Im sure nelson can fix that

anyway... the truck lost a tad below like 2600? But when flooring from stop it spins for a sec, then hooks.. then once the cam gets around 4k it ROASTS the tires! Awesome torque and it pulls hard! Cant wait to get the headers on and my idle fixed and i should be a happy camper. Powerwise and pull is a very noticeable difference though

If they're 285/75 16's like mine, it's more like 32.9...they don't like to get rolling. From the sounds of where that cam starts to come on it seems like an I-6 Trailblazer stall would be just right for your setup. Stalls around 2600 behind a 5.3 and very streetable...I believe that a few guys have the TB stalls and tow too.

thats what im gonna look for its that little lag down low in some dead rpms so that should fix it.

I just have to get my idle straight now before getting a stall

Bud, did you truck idle fine when you put her in drive or rev? My idle just drops to low so it surges after revving or going into gear

yeah, a bump in the idle to ~650 with adjustments to the idle air flow should take care of the stalling issue your having. then it's on to

so have you ran it with the Nelson tune or still the stock one, and was the tune setup for that specific cam?
I understand that makes a big difference

The idle never gave me a problem, just alot of KR with the 99 PCM. It would actually idle at the stock setting (575 in gear if I remember correctly). The idle is set around 650 now though which has been perfect. My throttle body is cable driven which may make a difference also.

I had the vhp cam 1 tune in there for the cam and it didnt seem to still wanna idle. I had the idle raised even with the vhp. But the rpms would drop to low as soon as i put the truck in gear, then back up to the normal. Im guessing the Idle airflow needs to be tweaked a little.

im ordering the nelson tune today so ill see if that helps

Did you try the Cam 2 tune just for poops and giggles? I think the cam 1 is the Vinci 065 (200/208), and yours is the cam 2...not sure if it'll make a diff though. I wonder if your truck being an 04 w/ drive by wire makes a difference. Whatever it is, I'm sure Nelson can fix it up.
