Angry Valve train noise when engine cold??

Well. I run a new best and now somthing has to go and tear up on me.
This morning on the way to work I noticed a tapping noise when accell. Temp was in the mid 30's so I thought maybe it was because it was so cold. The noise quit once the engine warmed up. Well, when I went to lunch, same thing,a very noticable tapping when accell, can only really notice at slow speeds, like when pulling away from a stop. I havent noticed it at idle, only when accell. I drove on home for lunch and by the time I got home the noise was gone.Everything was warmed up.
What are some possibilities it might be??

You gotta give these s**tbox pistons time to warm up and expand. I dont think you have anything to worry about.

also.. what oil are you running? If you are using a thicker oil it may be a lifter that isnt priming right away. Once the oil gets warm, the lifters will pump up easier.

Well, I've gotten used to the piston slap, but I think this is somthing else. It's pretty loud and has never done it before.
Maybe it's and exhaust leak??
Could it be valves? Do you ever have to adjust the valves on these engines?
Next time the engine is cold I'm going to start it, pop the hood and take a listen.
I hope your right and it's nothing.

i might be having the same noise you do. whenever i just fire it up in the morning and pull out of the driveway it knocks really loud at part throttle for about 1 minute then quits. sounds like a bad rod bearing knocking. i've used mobil 1 5w-30 and pf59 filter since it was new and its got ~65,000 miles. i hope its nothing serious, i would hate to see you have to pull that motor again. wish mine would hurry up and blow up though, i need a cammed 6.0

There is a TSB out for valvetrain noise. It calls for replacing the O-ring on the oil pick-up tube. Some of the symptons are noisy valvetrain, often percieved as a collapsed lifter. Conditions are usually done since new, and goes away when it warms up and may come back at temperature.

I'll see if I can find it again.

That's what it kind of sounds like, a lifter. Would there be any other symptons?? Oil pressure is fine.
Once warmed up it sounds fine and the truck is running normally.
See what you can dig up.
Thanks

There it is .... from the ODI website at http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/

It may even be a lifter tapping too.

My first thought from reading this was a lifter.

Ok, the bulliten says the noise should be noticed within the first 100-200 miles of driveing when vehicle is new. I dont fit into that description.I guess it could still apply though.
How can I check to see if it is a lifter, and if it is.What do I do?? Replace it/them??

Mine does it to......I just shrug it off and got used to it. My brother 4.3 does it also. BUT, you may want to check things out. The rockers have been known to puke out their needle bearings.
