thermostat mod

yesterday i found a thermostat mod on the net. it claims that by placing a shim of certain thickness it will determine the temp at which it will open.
I was wondering if anyone used this mod and if it would actually work?

Yep, it works. I did an experiment with my stock thermo and a hypertech 160 and got the same results. Just dont let you wife/mom catch you boiling a thermostat in her good cookware. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />

I found a brass(so it would not corrode) machine thread screw that was the perfect diameter in the junk drawer and cut varioius thicknesses off with the dremel.

I did the thermo mod a few times till I got it where I wanted it.
The largest piece that will fit in there will bring ur temps down to about 165-170. But beware, the bigger the piece the harder it is to put back together, and the harder it is to keep the plunger in place.
I wanted mine at 175 and by shaving down the one I had in there I could increase the temp till I got it where I wanted.
I guess you could also to the thing where you put the thermo in hot water, but I got mine where I wanted the 2 try so there was no need.
Maybe you guys can tell me, wouldent it be bad to run my truck under 170 without reporgraming the computer? Does it say in an closed loop??

I didn't measure the piece but I would guess it was 2-3MM. I just keep testing in on the stove in a pot and a cooking thermometer till it started opening at 160 and was fully open at 180. My truck normally runs between 179-183 via autotap. I didn't notice much if any change in MPG from the thermostat.
