Default swapping 5.3 to 6.0, CARB legal??

I'm in Cali. If i did the engine swap, would I still be able to pass smog? The truck is an 02.

There should be no issues with passing smog, even with stock tuning.

Do they check casting numbers on the heads & block?
That's the only way they would know you did a swap.

Engine swaps are legal in CA. Just not easy.
http://www.arb.ca.gov/msprog/aftermkt/replace.htm

Engine Changes
Engine changes are legal as long as the following requirements are met to ensure that the change does not increase pollution from the vehicle:

The engine must be the same year or newer than the vehicle.
The engine must be from the same type of vehicle (passenger car, light-duty truck, heavy- duty truck, etc.) based on gross vehicle weight.
If the vehicle is a California certified vehicle then the engine must also be a California certified engine.
All emissions control equipment must remain on the installed engine.
After an engine change, vehicles must first be inspected by a state referee station. The vehicle will be inspected to ensure that all the equipment required is in place, and vehicle will be emissions tested subject to the specifications of the installed engine.

It wouldnt be that hard as long as you follow the rules above. But the msmog station probably wouldnt even see that the block is different

Lemme add to this thread. Ok, passing visual inspection is probably not a problem but would it actually pass the emissions test? How bout if you have a 2003 without egr. Would a 6.0 with the pre 03 cams (the 03's replace egr with a retarded cam right?) pass the sniff test?

If my engine ever lets loose it won't be replaced with another 4.8.

...and from what I gather, it seems that I could put a 5.3 in but not a 6.0 since the 6.0 isn't offered in my same vehicle class. Anyway, if my engine ever tanks I'll put a 5.3 in for sure, but I'd really like to get a 6.0.

I read that ARB site and I'm wondering, are 68' to 73' vehicles subject to smog inspections now, that would suck.

As long as the motor your swapping is from another light duty or medium duty truck youd be fine, whatever your catylyst says. You could swap it because they 1/2 and 3/4 and even the one tons sometimes are classified in the same class.

And yes it would pass because they both would be in the same class and subject to the same emissions testing.
