I am looking for more low end TQ for towing easier. On the highway I am around 2K rpms and want more TQ at that rpm. Dont get me wrong, it tows 5-6K easy and hardly downshifts on mild hills. I just want it to go smoother and get moving easier. I guess I spoiled myself with over 600rwtq on the cummins.
My thoughts are-----advance the stock can 2-4* to move the curves down. I know ir works with big cams but not sure about aftermarket. My second thought is a set of 1.85 rockers. They are supposed to add hp and TQ throughout the rpm range. I swapped from 1.5 to 1.6 on an old 4.3 I had and it was a pretty big difference, will the 5.3 be the same?

Another angle to look at is the trans. Put the vette servo for the 1/2 and a Billit OD servo in. This will help on the initial start up and keeping it in OD longer without the constant up/down shifting. Also, a transgo kit will help. For a stock engine, good mid length headers will help (Thorley's come to mind) and a good towing tune

If no FI then gears would be the next best thing, though pricey in a 4x4 since you have to do the front and rear together.
I picked up some noticeable low end torque with my long tubes but not a whole lot.

I would think about gears but i'm sure I have 3.73's now and I also dont want to loose my 21.4mpg with 4.10's.

i never lost any mileage when i did the 4.10 swap. i did notice that i could pull a lot easier than before. but if you have the 3.73s now then you probably won't notice too much of a difference

21 MPG!
I wouldn't want to screw with that either!
