Default Some questions about the STS turbo kit...

How much are they? And how much are the accessories?

Does the extra tubing really act as an intercooler? To be safe, would it be easy to mount an intercooler under the truck like spearco or something?

What turbo sizes do they offer? When would the boost kick in for each size?

How is the boost controlled, can it be controlled in the truck?

I'm really interested in these kits (I can't afford it right now). Could the turbo experts help me out understand these things? Thanks.

STS FAQ Section Ok, heres the low down. I been studying this system for a couple weeks now.

Price is $3995 for the basic kit

$500 for the Methanol Kit

$150 Dual Stage Boost controller

Most dealer will work with you on the pricing. I'm getting my kit much cheaper.

The extra tubing does act like an intercooler in a way AND the fact that the turbo is out of the engine compartment and is subject to airflow the temps of the turbo are at least 500deg cooler than engine mount units. You really would not benifit from an intercooler because any intercooler that is big enough to really drop the temps is gonna create a pressure drop which means you will have to spin the turbo higher to overcome the drop. In doing so you will create much more heat than you are taking out. In one test they saw 175deg temps at the outlet of the turbo and 115deg at the intake. With 8psi they saw 225deg temps at the outlet and that's just a 3psi jump.

IMO with this particular kit you'd be MUCH better off just running their Methanol kit or the Alky-Control or SMC Alk kit. It is only about $350-$500 for these kits and they work much better than just intercooling. In some tests that were posted on the Buick GN site they showed that Methanol injection lowered temps from the 145 to 96deg at the intake. A lot of those guys are running 20+psi on 93 octane!!

Click here for Alk injection info at a GN site

With the Alky kits and a dual-stage boost controller you can have a Norcal boost setting at like 5-6psi and a High setting of whatever and when you need some real power just clikc the High setting and it can auto arm the Alky system and when you reach a predetermined level of boost it will start spraying the Alk or Meth. If you run out of Alk/Meth or the pump shuts down for any reason the boost controller will revert back to Normal as a safety precaution.

As far as lag it shouldn't be that bad really. if you think about it you'll only have about a couple extra feet of pipe than you would on a front mount kit with an intercooler AND you are not trying to force boost through the intercooler so in reality how can the lag be much worse? Because it is farther back? Gimmie a break, ever looked at the amount of pipng in a front mount turbo kit + the intercooler itself? Plus they use a lower A/R housing to take avantage of the cooler more dense exhaust air to help spin the compressor wheel efficiently and quick enough not to induce too much lag. It is the opposite of what you would do on a front mount system where the exhaust is hooter and less dense, they use a higher A/R housing.

If you have the time and are seriously thinking about this kit I highly recomend reading their FAQ section. It answers almost everything. I also went to a bunch of other sites checking out stanrd turbo setups and everything rings true except where some say the turbo needs really hot air to work. They are correct for their turbo systems but try putting a turbo designed for the rear of a car in that situation and you'd have problems.

If you have any questions lemme know. I am trying to be very thorough when picking out this kit and if all goes well I will have it in by the end of the month and get dyno and track #s soon after.

Ohh, I am gonna talk to a buddy of mine in our car club about header on this type of kit and see if it is worth it or not. Here is a pic of his car

He is on the front page of that website I linked to above if you wanted to see more about his car. It's pretty cool.

Thanks! Let us know the results. I wish I could afford the kit, it will for sure be on my next truck!
