It's not good to tow in overdrive!?!
I towed a Kubota track-hoe (?#'s) for 70 miles one-way and had no problems. My 5.3 acted like it wasn't anything!!
I towed my 72 Chevelle (heavy ****) about 200 miles to Centerville when I sold it and had to get a new tranny for my 90 Silvy (had 176k miles).

I wasn't in 4th for long, I just wanted to see if the lil' 4.8 could get up to speed. I was doin' 75 in a 55...oops. Only did it once, and it wasn't for long. Anyway the track is only 15min. (8-10mi) away from my house, but mostly, tow/haul keeps it in 3rd for some reason. Of course I'm only going about 40-45 with slow people in front of me.
You guys are really hauling some serious distances! I wouldn't tow that far period in my truck. No dedicated tranny cooler or trailer brakes...I dunno? Is that how far away your nearest track is or what? I'm definatly spoiled!

Why is it bad to tow in drive?
I towed a u-haul from Washington to tucson (1600 miles or so) and had absolutely no problems at all
, my combined weight was 11,500 i think with me in the truck. There are some steep grades around utah also and handled like a champ going up them and down. Like everyone else has said allow yourself some room and you should be fine.

I'm back. I decided against the trailor and drove the new ride home
Thank God for the reliablity of the silverado. Anything that could have gone wrong practically when wrong. I was so glad to get both cars home. When I got back in my truck I had such a smile on my face. Its never let me down (only 40k miles but still).
I dont ever see myself without a chevy pickemup truck
