Default Restrictive exhaust parts

2005 Tahoe, 5.3L(non flex), 4x4

So what are the REALLY restrictive parts? Stock cats obviously are. How about the muffler? What hp are the manifolds good up to? Not gonna do much to the engine besides a CAI eventually and a tune. Maybe a better stock LS cam next year.

Would shorty headers be worth the money or are there a better set of stock manifolds?

Muffler is the most restrictive item on there. The stock cats flow pretty well but if you're going for high revving power then they will be an issue. The stock manifolds will flow as much as you want but a set of longtubes will give you a power boost in the mid to high ranges.

Shorty headers are a waste of money. The OE shorties (what you have now) perform better.

That's interesting about the headers. How come there is no increase?

Have you ever looked at your factory manifolds? They are virtually a shortie header... Long tubes are a different story tho...

Yeah I figured the mandrel bend piping would increase flow some compared to stock manifolds sharp bends.

There will be a gain but you could spend your money elsewhere. Personally I would buy a stall before I bought headers.

An aftermarket torque converter. Not exhaust related but it is performance related.

Ok good info here. I did notice the stock manifolds do look like headers. Im basically just going for some more low end torque so long tubes can wait till I decide to get nuts with this thing.

Do most of you just go with a cat-back or just replace the muffler?

Are our pipes stainless or aluminized from the factory?
(asking because my 2001 Bonneville SSEi had stainless pipe all the way back from the plant). If they arent stainless I may just drop the extra coin on it and know that it will last for a long time.

I had a '94 YUKON and replaced the factory cat-back with a Gibson unit and really liked the sound. I am not a fan of the Flowmaster tinny sound.

Welcome to Pt.Net! I would suggest spending some time in the GM driveline section to learn more about transmission mods.
