REBUILD ADVICE NEEDED: Chevy silverado 1500 2wd single cab
#1
Hey guys, my name is Eric. I am weighing a few options about how to go by rebuilding my 1500 chevy silverado 5.7.
Ok so first let me explain to you how I got the truck and you will understand why I'm so clueless as too what to do to it.
When I was 16, my father bought a nice 1993 1500 Chevy 2wd single cab from this older guy who was retired military. All I know about the truck is that it is modded as follows:
350 tbi bored, new pistons obviously, cranecams camshaft ( although i have no idea what kind), corvette heads (not sure what kind), high performance intake manifold, hooker headers, different gearing, and true duel gutted exhaust going thru two flowmaster 40s. i also would assume the eci has some sort of special tune from when they rebuilt the motor. Also different sized pulleys are installed.
too be honest I have no idea how much horsepower and torque this motor put out, but I will say it was extremely quick for a chevy tbi 1993 2wd. I blew a head gasket and found out it has a cracked head. I am not sure if I should spend the money to fix this older motor, or drop a new block into it? I mean this motor has some milage on it also, and i'm not even sure if fixing this old motor is even worth the horsepower it has.
so here are my questions: a) what is the max horsepower one can get from a naturally aspirated 5.7 1993 chevy block? b) are there any other blocks, maybe more recent fuel injected type motors that will offer more horsepower to start with? such as 5.3 , lq4 6.0 motors like the 2500 hd has? etc, what are my options here. I would appreciate any responses, no bashing please. I had this truck since I was 16 so in highschool I did give this truck hell up and down the road.

Personally I would go with a 5.3 swap. If you do some shopping around you can get it done for around $3k, if not less. It all depends what you want to spend. However with the 5.3 you will have the capability for more power, and also have a bit more fuel efficiency out of it as well. If you want to look more into the swap, I know LS1Truck.com has a ton of information that will help you out.

Welcome Eric..good to see ya on the site..LS(5.3,5.7,6.0,6.2) motor gets my vote..your going to get Better gas mileage with More Reliable power..I say sell the other parts individually and get as much money back from that and put it towards the LS swap..you will be damn glad you did..now lets hear some input from some others

hey guys, I have a 1993 chevy single cab 2wd 5.7 tbi, which my father bought for me when I was 16. we purchased this truck from an older man who was retired millitary. I blew a head gasket and have a cracked head so I am trying to decide what too do with this motor. Here are the mods:
-5.7 tbi bored max
-high perf pistons
-cranecams cam(not sure specs, but i know its aggressive)
-corvette heads ( not sure exactly what type)
-high perf gm intake manifold
-hooker comp headers true dual exhaust
-eci tune
-gearing change
I am purchasing a brand new 5.7 tbi just like the one that came in it in 1993, because the old motor has way too many miles on it and I am afraid it wont hold up much longer, so putting money into the old block isnt something im going to do. I want to keep as many high performance parts from the old motor and have them put on the new motor.
like i said i have no idea exactly what the specs on this motor are , or exactly what cam and head is in this thing, needless to say i blew a gasket and the head is cracked.
now too my question. I know I can get a brand new factory made 5.7 tbi motor with just the heads for pretty cheap. Im wondering if I can use the high performance intake , exaust, and cam, with the stock heads that will come on the new motor.

whats up man, i have some pretty shitty news today about the rebuild. its more or less my dads truck because he bought it for me. He told me we are going to purchase a brand new 5.7 tbi block just like the one that came in it in 1993. He is going to purchase just the bear block with the stock heads. I want to use as many of the bolt ons from the current motor, and use them on the new 5.7 he is purchasing. basically im wondering if i can use the cam, headers, and intake from the built motor and install them on the new block with the stock factory heads.
also, do you think that I could get a new 5.3 motor for a decently cheap price? maybe I can talk him into getting that one because it is 5.3 fuel injected , and would get better gas milage.
