Default please help I'm concerned: wacky oil pressure

I just noticed this. My oil pressure stays at 80 (maxed) and when I get over about 5k rmps it drops to 0 like nothing, when I let off... it jumps back up. What in the world is that all about? And I could be paranoid but I just started noticing a knocking when i changed my oil. Not loud but its there.

Thats a scary thing, could be as simple as the sending unit goin out and sending crazy outputs to the gauge? A bad cluster? or an oil pump/engine prob? Sending units are cheap so it's a good place to start. you could put a pressure gauge on it to check if that's the problem. I'd hope for the best but expect the worst. Don't drive it hard till you get it checked out to prevent any possable engine damage.

It's not exactly what your seeing, but from time to time mine is acting goofy too. I have read that these clusters are prone to having the stepper motors go out, this is a symptom. Supposedly a TSB that the dealer will fix if you are under 70k mi.

my oil pressure guage just starting doing that too!!. I have a feeling its the stepper motor (already replaced my speedo myself). I ordered 5 more motors and I am going to replace all the motors in the cluster. I havent driven mine since it happened just in case it's not the gauge. Let me know what you find, and i'll keep you posted when i get my new stepper motors in.

could be as simple as dirt.

One tahoe we had would go to 0 at idel and run at max the rest of time. I think the sending unit was bad.

I just hooked up my buddy's intercepter gauge to see if my cluster was acting funny for my oil pressure. Turns out the cluster is working fine, My oil pressure is goin all the way up past 80!! What should I do?

My truck's running fine, I am just worried about it. I'm guessing the sending unit. I work at oreilly's so I might just buy it and try it. Anybody else fix their problem?

A few years ago the sending unit would have been my first guess, but I've read so much about guys having problems with the 03 and up clusters that I'm leaning towards that as my first guess now.
