Not really the most you can tell is if it comes with an intake manifold and tha fuel rail is return less then its at least an 04 and up and if you take the head bolts off and there 2 diffrent sizes the again its 04 and up if the head bolts are 3 diffrent sizes its 03 and down !

The vehicle identification number (VIN) is located on the left side rear of the engine block (1) and is typically a 9 digit number stamped or laser-etched onto the engine at the vehicle assembly plant.

• The first digit identifies the division.
• The second digit identifies the model year.
• The third digit identifies the assembly plant.
• The fourth through ninth digits are the last 6 digits of the VIN.

Actually the '99/'00 cranks don't have a spacer installed and instead have a crankshaft that has 1.250˝ wide rear flange vs the typical 857˝ narrow rear flange. This was to work with transmissions such as the 4L80E, whereas the '01 and up models used a spacer to accomplish the same thing, without the need for multiple crankshafts.

If you ever decide to go with a serious boost setup and need to lower the compression, you can easily do so by swapping heads in the future
this is what i had been thinking myself. thanks for backing up my reasoning! to the op, 800 bucks for a 50k mi lq4 sounds sweet. id pull the trigger on that for sure!
