Loss Of Low end Torque?
#1
Hi to all!
I have a 2002 Silverado 4x4 with 5.3. I can't get the truck to spin its tires hardly at all. Can removing the cats cause loss of low end torque? I am using O2 simms to fool the computer. I have no Check Engine light. My truck was doing this about the same though even before I removed the cats. I heard someone say It was because the Torque Management kicks in to protect the drive train. Anyone heard anything about this? I don't have a Hyper Tech Power Programmer III. If I did how much will this help. Is there anyone out there with the same problem I have? Anyone know how I can fix the problem? Comments Please!!!!!

what kind of mods do you have on your truck? i get the impression that your truck is fairly stock???? if so you wont be able to spin your tires much anyways, especially if its a 4wd just because they weigh more...
taking off the cats will cause a decrease in back pressure which in turn takes away from low end torque. On our heavy trucks we need all the low end torque we can get to get us moving. stuff like exhaust (some exhausts... i.e. 2.5" duals with an h-pipe), long tube headers (excelent mid range power), screw type superchargers (whipple) obviously produce great ammounts of low end torque but come at a fairly high price
hope this helps

What he said. I don't think you have to worry about tq management yet. I don't have enough mods for it to matter yet, and I have a couple . I'm not sure how you have your exhaust, but running stock cats, two single mufflers with a X or H pipe and running the pipes out as far as possible will yield good results without loss of tq. The more free the exhaust, the more tq you lose(in most cases). The Hypertech PPIII is a great investment IMO. There are a few choices out there, so research before you buy. They all have different functions. Good luck

From what I've heard, all 5.3's react differently but I dont know why. I have a 2000 Z-71 SC/SB and I can light them up at will without giving it full throttle(dead stop no powerbrake)It done it when it was brand new, and after my few mods it is about the same coming out of the hole. I added a K&N drop in and dual cat back Flowmasters which helped mid and high range with no loss at low range. But I dont think you can go by my truck because it was strong from the get go. Hope I made sence to ya.

I have a 5.3 4.10 locking rear. 4X4 ext cab. It will spin the tires no problem. The 4.10 gears help it I'm sure.

My 02 5.3 2wd wouldn't spin the tires stock either so I know exactly what you are talking about. Then I put on a whipple and it still wouldn't spin! The computer was pulling the timing down at the initial hit of the throttle. Somtimes as low a -5 degrees! It took acustom tune to get mine straightened out.

my 5.3l was pretty strong off the factory also.
i could light up the tires from day one when i brought it home . i then added a drop in K&N and a true dual flowmaster setup which really peeled 'em. i have added some more mods and if you program the shift points right, the truck will scratch second gear with no problem...
i think it'll scratch second on a +4 mph on my truck. or if i want to show off, i'll let it rev up until its about to shift, then let go of the pedal and hit it again and it'll scratch real hard ... i too also have a 4:10 gear
