You dont have to completely remove it for it to work as designed all it needs is un-obstructed airflow from the scoop to the airbox the plastic everywhere else dosnt effect it.

I followed the directions as much as i saw fit and it said to put the ram air under the plactic core cover. That is what i did. I can scan the instructions for you guys to see if you'd like. I can't see how it would go under the core support.
I think the main thing that helps the VR kits is the fact that they use air horns everywhere that air comes in. Whenever you can smooth out choppy air you should be able to pick up power. I know on all my cars...supercharged or turbo i have some sort of air horn. On my supercharged Mustang i picked up 2lbs. of boost and a good amount of power by putting an air horn on it. On my RX7 with a GT42 it also has an air horn...a really big one and it helps alot. We did some testing on these things before and on our test Toyota Supra it picked up 50rwhp and the turbo spooled by about 350 rpm faster. Those #'s are at the high end because the car was already making 1200rwhp.
I know VR also say they use Venturi's which i couldn't find anywhere. I think they might be referring to the air horns because if i'm not mistaken a Venturi is when the tube necks down and then opens back up. Could someone correct me if i'm wrong?

The scoop does NOT go under the core supprt it goes over it and where it goes under the plastic trim it to where the core support cover is not bowed up or anything to allow good airflow and I would recommend ditching the crappy foam stuff and getting some thick rubber weather stripping to replace it that foam stuff goes bad pretty quick.

The intake has one at the bottom of the intake and where the filter mounts. They also sell one for the throttlebody that i have in there.

All in all I'm happy with the gains, even in this LA heat I'm able to turn the 20s over quite nicely

Call them up or email them telling them that you discovered junk on the MAF Screen with the foam filter, they should be more than willing to replace that for you. I had the standard non-ram air kit, and they replaced it for free with the Ram Air one. I wasn't pleased with the bolt placement on the scoop, and the complete lack of mounting hardware in the kit I received, so I sold it to someone that was willing to spend more time working on it, and last I heard he loves it.
