Hypertech and tranny cooler questions
#1
I've had my HPP3 for about a year and a half and haven't really played with it yet. The first time I installed the tuning all I set the shift points to is 1st +3, 2nd +5 and 3rd +7. Some one on the forums said that he gained .4 by changing his shift points, what should they be set at for the best results? Also my rev limiter is set to 5600. I haven't messed with shift firmness because I herd that it will mess up my tranny over time even with regular driving, is that true can't I change the shift firmness up just a hair to make it more crisp? I can't have my tranny go because if it does I'll be walking for a long time, I've blown all of my money on college. Also I have the octane set up for 93 oct, only the best for my truck! What should I change as far as my tuning goes? And yes later on I will get the LS1 edit for right now I'm going to stick with the Hypertech due to lack of funds for right now.
My next question is for my tranny cooler. I have one I think that came with the truck, its real small and sits rightin front of my radiator. Is it a tranny cooler, should I add another one/ bigger aftermarket one?
Suggestions are appreciated. Thanks

Try these setting... 1-2 +3 2-3 +11 and set your rev limiter @ 6K. You should be shifting right at 5800-5900 with these settings. I have not heard of anyone messing up their tranny by adding the shift firmness of the HPP3.
As far as your tranny cooler if its to the far laft(drivers side), I think that is for your power steering. If its somewhere in the middle, then you have a tranny cooler. You should be fine with that. I don't even have one. I am looking into getting one though.

The tranny cooler should be attatched to the crossmember in the front that runs across the hood latch supprt. It should also have some pieces going to the top where the hood does latch. It has 2 lines coming in from the bottom, one on each side of it. THe power steering cooler that is on the drivers side is funny looking. It's narrow, about 2 inches, and as tall as the A/C condensor.
Your shift firmness will do more good than harm for your transmission by making it slip less. 1-2 +4, 2-3 +7 worked well for me. I didn't bother with the 3-4 shift cause you don't ever hit that at WOT anyways.
About an aftermarket tranny cooler, if you were pushing some major power, I'd say go for it, but being stock, or close to it, you will be just fine with the factory one.

i've read alot about what to set the HPP3 to. here is what i have done and have had positive results:
1-2 = +3 or +4
2-3 = +10 or +11
3-4 = +0
87 tuning (don't waste your money on 93) - i have a G-tech comp pro and was going to do an experiment on this, but i have been too busy and lazy. maybe i will get around to it this winter when i get bored of the 20* temp in NY. want to see if it benefitted
shift firmness = yes (i have tried it with and w/o and i always go back to yes for shift firmness even with the yank and w/o)
i plan on doing an experiment with the g-tech to see how the ET's differ with and w/o the HPP3
1-2 = +3 or +4
2-3 = +10 or +11
3-4 = +0

I can save you some time on your experiment. I ran a best of 15.59 without, and an hour later I ran a 15.17. I went on to run a 14.98 that same day. This was all done at the track, but my g-tech times improved at an equal rate. How do you like the converter Keuka? I really want one bad, like this week while TBYRNE still has them on sale, but I am hesitant. This is my daily driver and I don't want to "ruin" it. (lol) I have started moddin' before and not been happy until the car was a roller cammed', non vacuum makin', neighborhood wakin' up, cam 2 burnin, piece of ****!! Well, maybe not quite that bad, but you get the point. Looking for someone to "push me over the edge" and convince me to get the damn TT3000. HELP! Thanks.

****, if you are running basically the same mods i am before the TC, you should have that 14.98 at 14.5. you and i have intake, exhaust, and programmer on an EC. but i have the 4wd, custom speaker box, and 2 10" subs putting on more weight. i was running a 15.6-15.7 with out the TC. i will have to find out the difference with the yank. i am guessing 15.2-15.3
the last time i used the g-tech with the TC was over the summer. i am yet to g-tech the Z71 during the colder months. something i might have to experiment this turkey vay-cay. also, i have eaton posi that has not been installed yet. curious to see what that does for me. i hate the 1 wheel peel as some would say.
as for the yank 3000. i got it back in the spring and was reluctant to get it because i was a daily driver and towed a 19' bassboat. i researched alot. so i heard nothing but positive comments. kind of an expensive mod, but for the price, it was worth the $700 plus installation to increase ET's by .4-.5 sec
it was weird driving at 1st. but you get used to it pretty quickly. peel tires easily at 1/4 throttle. where before i would WOT at a complete stop and not even spin a tire. if you are going to do this mod, get posi. it is no fun with the one wheel peel. when putting on the intake and exhaust, you lose alot of low end torque and back pressure. the TC brought it back. prepare for whiplash. the only thing i don't like about it was that i freak out everytime my truck shifts gears because i am afraid i am hurting the tranny. you might want a shift kit or servos. something i didn't do. someone else chime in here if they have had success with those upgrades. also, have a good tranny shop put it in. you don't want any screw ups when installing this mod. i had a few complications with my install. my friend runs a tranny shop and never did a 4x4 with all that computer ****. we ran into a few problems but were minor fixes when we diagnosed the problems. just a few wiring mishaps. hope this helps
