Default How do I get that killer sound?

How do I get that....hmmm how can I ask this...
You know that sound dragsters make? That crackling low tone rumble you hear, I want to get as close as I can to that sound. I love hearing a hot cam running. But what do I need to make it sound like that? Thanks guys if at all possible!

long tube headers, no cats, 14" collector extensions in place of your exhaust system

Could you explain a little more detail on those collectors? I don't know much about them.

you will want one huge *** cam to start with, and some bad *** heads. then get some long tube headers like reallyslowtruck said with the collectors.

you dont want any pipes leading off of your headers, and no cats. it will be some loud *** ****, no restriction. i wouldnt recomend it though, it will be loud all the time, non stop, and the resonence in the cab will be bad.

Bah! Just unbolt your Y-pipe where the two pipes merge.

you can start off by going with a magnaflow bullet race muffler or even a one chamber flowmaster. they sound nice.

A collector extension is just a short piece of pipe that you bolt up to your headers when you dont want to run any exhaust at all. Good for weight reduction but not good for lasting friendships with law enforcement.

im going to have to agree with the bullet muffler. if you want it LOUD (maybe annoyingly loud)... Get your cats taken off and in place of them put 2 bullet mufflers, and MAYBE another down the pipe, but other than that no real mufflers. would be loud as HELL!

what i have seems very loud but not open exhaust loud.

longtubes, no cats, a pair of 3" turbos, and 3" pipes all the way out the back. nice rumbel most of the time but open it up and it screams. too loud for me but if your looking for loud you might like it

Your not going to get that nice crisp crackling idle sound with out a larger cam with some good size lift duration, and tight lope seperation. You will also like these guys have told you, will need some good flowing exhaust. You will have to do a bunch to your truck to make it streetable with a cam like that. Most cams like that will work good in the high rpms but not make much down low. Thus, making it not very fun to drive. Then you get into longer push rods to make up for the lift. You wont get this sound just through exhaust. If you want something close to it look at the gm hot cam for these. But without a big stall they are not much fun.
