got a tick

ok guys the plugs have like 100 miles on them i changed them last week along with the new headers and gaskets wich also do not leak.... if thier is a vacume leak it is one sneeky mother... i took a whole can of carb cleaner to all the lines around the intake manifold and all that good stuff..... i did that right after i cleaned the TB... not one light is on in the truck no missfire or anything like that... well im going to take the heads off tomarow anyway to make sure nothing is sticking and then while im already that far inside i might as well check the lifters.... how can you tell if a lifter is bad?

Did you fix the rough idle yet? I'd go after that first. The tick may be "characteristic" of your engine. Mine had made ticking noises since day one...sounds like a valve tap or exhaust leak, but it isn't anything like that. May be a lifter, but I plan a 6.0 swap so I'm gonna live with the noise (as I have for seven plus years), and just make sure that I have a new set of lifters, proper valve lash and lifter pre-load, and etc.
You did the plugs, so try cleaning the throttle body, changing the filters (air and fuel...and pcv for the heck of it), and the wires if you didn't already do so. If the normal tune up items don't help you out, you may have to get deeper into it and check compression and fuel pressure, and maybe get a scanner on it and check what the O2 sensors are doing, as well as your long term fuel trims and some other primary data values.

i broke down the engine all the lifters seemed ok to me put all new gaskets in..... all new bolts... still got the damn tick and rough idle...... its strange its not constantly rough it will be fine then it is like a shiver if that makes any sense..... just shakes real fast and go away and i cant find any pattern to it either just kinda does it whenever.... runs perfect anywhere past 1000 rpm

mine "shivers" like that too. has since the day i bought it. it's really noticable when you have the driver's side door open. it will also try to stall a little on start up every once in a while. i'm leaning toward a fuel problem, maybe an injector?

HERE I AM TO SAVE THE DAY.......... Ok now seriously I work with GM.... the tick is very common in GM GENIII truck motors.... not as much on the ls f and y cars, but still happens.
first thing to check is your wires, they can slide off the coil a little, and cause a little voltage leak which the crack could be heard a s a tick or click. just take the boot that hooks to the coil, and twist a little, and push it back on. you can even pull it off, look for carbon tracking where maybe it has already arched across teh rubber, and ruined the wire. If that has happened then please replace the wires asap. If that is not the case, then please push them back on securely and give it a shot.
if that does not fix your problem, then yu may want to check your oil pump, there is a little o ring on it that can split very very easily. that can let air in which will cause the oil to aerate, which will create the tapping or clicking also. its very rare that this probem is ever a major malfunction ( collapsed lifter) some people have even switched to mobil one and reported taht is was not as loud

Les, take a broom handle and stick it to your valve covers and then listen in your ear. Do you hear the tapping then? Now move the broom handle up to the fuel rail, is it louder? Check my thread out here https://www.performancetrucks.net/fo...d.php?t=371155
I bet your issue is similar to mine.

I have an '00 5.3, and mine's been doing the same thing since I can remember. I've had the injectors flushed, and the tick disappeared for about 30 minutes. I installed new plugs and wires, and that did nothing. I've had the truck checked for exhaust leaks around the engine twice, and nothing. If you figure out what's making the noise, please let us know.
