Default Have a question on injector pulse duration (trying to troubleshoot an engine tick)

Ok gang, here's what going on. Since I took my truck out of storage this spring it seems to have developed a tick in the engine that I thought was a lifter that was either sticky or didn't have enough preload. It was minor enough where I left it alone for a few months. It comes and goes. Well, after some recent road rage incidents in the last month (6500 RPM+ tire spinning) the tick has gotten louder. I know it's coming from the drivers side so I yanked the valve cover Monday and rolled all the pushrods on some glass and they were all straight, blew them all out incase there was crud in one and reassembled properly torqing them all to 26 ft lbs rather than 22. Put everything back together and the truck seemed whisper quiet. After 20 minutes of driving around town the tick was back. Last night I took a woodem broom handle and put it on the drivers side cyl head and it was absolutely whisper quiet, although I could hear the tick that sounded like a lifter when I took my ear off the broom handle. I then put the boom handle on the injector rail and holy could I hear it then. Which leads me to ask the question about injector pulse duration. Never watching a TPI injector work in action, do they pulse ONLY when the intake valve is open? (so it could lead me to think it's a lifter) Or like a TBI motor are they running all the time? If they pulse only when the intake valve event is occuring I think I may have a noisy injector. I run only non-ethanol gas in my truck and over the winter I stored the truck with a full tank of gas and STABIL. For those who say that GEN III engines are always noisy or have valve train noise, I would be interested to know if you've ever listened to your injector rails. Maybe we're onto something here? Anyways if someone can answer my injector pulse duration question I may be a step in the right direction.

Thanks,

Joe

The injector pulses just slightly before the intake valve opens (we have SFI)
