Default Going bigger in California

Is it possible to put a 408 or bigger motor with cam and heads and still make it California emissions legal?

California DMV wouldn't know if the engine was a standard 6.0l or 408. The high tail pipe emissions will come from the extended overlap of the cam that gets used. If you keep the cam duration short and the lobe center wide, your tail pipe emissions will be similar to stock with a 408 or even a 427. Catalytic converters are mandatory and very necessary to meet the strict tailpipe test and must be retained. Cams with durations of 224º are about the maximum safe grinds that can pass the sniffer test. That cam in a 408 is a solid combination for a truck application.
Hope this helps.

don't forget that ALL of your original smog equipment will need to be hooked up too. there's the visual test as well. (not to point out the obvious)

I have a couple of friends with camaros who passed smog with 224* duration cams, so I know it's doable. I noticed the STS in your sig, I may be wrong but I don't think any aftermarket turbo has a CARB exemption to pass smog. Might want to leave that off when you test.

Lucky for my truck they did get a CARB #. If I go with a 408 or bigger I might go N\A. This turbo is fun but I need more low end.

While Im on the subjet, for those of you who have purchased a complete 408 short block: Who is the best company to go through??
