I'm pretty sure that metal ring is part of the gasket. When I changed mine out, I thought I screwed up my front cover as well and it looked similar. It turned out to be the metal part of the gasket. That thing is a **** to get out.

The lowest mileage I've personally see a LSx cam fail is 23,000. The engine had a pronounced tick all the time and a slight miss but not enough to trip a misfire code. Number 8 intake lifter was ate up along with the lobe as well as one lifter on number 2. Its like the early 80s 305's all over again.

LOL...remember the Crossfire cams, they practically came off of the truck with flat lobes

That was before my time.

The best one I've heard of yet is a brand new Camaro that either came off the transport truck with collapsed lifters of they collapsed during the or right after the PDI test drive. I know the mileage was in the single digits when the heads were pulled off.

so far so good, haven't had any major problems since I changed the cam out. Just got back from the track a bit ago..
