Default effect of timing on a/f?

I am going to the dyno tomorrow to get some "after" numbers to see how much the intercooler helped. I am trying to get some edit files prepared ahead of time and was wondering what effect adding say 6 degrees of timing would have on the air/fuel ratio if all other things are the same?

I posted this in the pcm section, but I wanted to pick the brains of the truck experts too.

I didnt know timing affected the afr that much

just an idea
why not just set up several files
like 22, 24, 26, 28, 30

make your first run to adjust your afr out
then copy that fuel over to the 22 thru 30 files
or whatever you decided to try
run it till it knocks or stops gaining and throw a little more fuel at it
and see if it goes away

I read somewhere about runnin it rich down low for tq,
leaning it out in the middle and then fattening it back up
on the top

but having all the timing out of the way may save you some time

For each degree you add, you want to bump up the fuel a tad. Then there will be diminishing returns where adding more timing will not add anymore power and no amount of fuel will fix the pinging your getting. back off a degree and leave the fuel as is on te rich side. Safe is better then going boom.

Let me be more specific about what I am doing. Have been running 11 degrees in non-intercooled form. Any more and it would detonate (IAT's up to 230 at the end of a 1/4 mi pass) Now I am intercooled and the IAT's are in the 140's max. I have the A/F dialed in perfect for max power (maybe a little lean for safe daily driving) but am still only running 11 degrees. I want to sneak up on timing on the dyno, but If the addtl timing is going to lean it out then I need to add some fuel in the programs with the extra timing, right?

Tib-thanks for that link. Now my eyes are crossed and my head hurts !! Lotsa useful info there.

You should be able to get away with somewhere near 16-18 Degrees depending on how much boost you are running with 10psi of boost 18 degrees or soo
I'd shoot to be a little richer on the dyno try for somewhere near 11.3-11.7 to be safe on the road
I hear your ears aren't so good at hearing detonation

Good luck man !!

GMC-Huh? What? I couldn't hear ya. LOL. Speak LOUDER. Seriously, I am around 8.5 to 9 psi so I was thinking 16-18 degrees. Right now the A/F is around 11.7-11.8 so I am going to fatten it up a little before jacking up the timing.

I am hoping for a gain of 50 RWHP with the intercooler and the extra timing. I made a couple shakedown runs on opening day of the local track already and it was quicker and faster than last years best by about .2 and 2 mph still on the low timing.

i never really do see any a/f changes with changes in timing. if it does change it isn't much.

i have tried my timing all over the place and on my set up it really doesn't like 18eg even with good fuel. i setteled on 14deg.

My Radix is running 23 degrees with no knock,I'd been easing the timing up a little at a time, then Flyer tells me he's running 29 degrees with no problems.

I'm in the 18-20 range with 8.5 psi peak. Its not tuned perfectly yet and I get a little random knock.

With 100* lower IATs and 5+ degrees of timing, I'd expect 50 rwhp gains.
