Default converter questions

ok, i'm tired of this burned out stocker and i'm looking to go with something like a PY3600, but every so often i have quite a bit of weight in the bed of the truck...i don't tow much so i wasn't sure if there was any difference in towing or having it in the bed when you're thinking about the converter and how it affects towing weight or capability. and also, WHY does the converter stall speed being higher, say 3600-4k affect towing ability?

Not sure on exactly why it affects towing ability, but I would guess that it is something with the amount of heat it will produce. 3000 more pounds would make a 3800 stall more like around 4400 probably and be hard on eerything including the already proven weak spot tranny and converter.

damn matt! how long have you been in here? the difference is slippage. slippage equals heat. that is why you don't use a high stall converter if you are going to haul anything. so how often is "every so often" and how much weight are you talking and how far? a 3600 is pretty steep anyway.

Also usually the the case size has to be reduced to achieve the higher stall which means a smaller lockup clutch. The smaller clutches cannot hold the extra weight.

every so often is like, once a month if that...and definatly under 1000#, probably more like 400-700 if that even.
