im needing a cam install in the twin-cities area. im been quoted $1500 and $2700. now way in hell im paying that. for that price id rather sell my truck and buy one already cammed. just wondering who had their camshaft installed by someone else,if so what is everyone paying?

before anyone asks....its below freezing here, i dont have a garage, and i rarely have any time off work-so no i cannot install it myself.

 

Cam install not including cost of parts should be around $600 for cam, springs and pushrod install. Parts are $ more.

 

That makes me think they have no idea what's actually involved. It sounds like they're under the impression that you have to lift or remove the engine to do the swap. Here in NC, several places quoted me based on the hours in the shop manual (around 20-22 hours for heads & cam swap). I was lucky to find an old-timer locally who did mine for $700.

Keep looking around and make sure the shop you go with has done a swap in these GenIII engines. Good luck!

 

I gave up finding a shop to do it and ended up doing mine myself after asking lots of questions and doing a lot of reading.

you can also go to www.ls1howto.com and he has a great right up. its for a f-body but its basically the same. hell someone near you should be able to help you out.
i usually charge 300 to 400. for cam installs. and ive done about 20 or 25 of them. so there really easy. just make sure the lifters stay up.

 

500 is the MOST assuming you are providing parts, gaskets, and fluids. IMO

 

Its not hard...Do it yourself.

 

I had the same issue. The dealer even quoted me $3000-3500. I found a great guy who seems to know everything about gen III engines. He did the labor for $650.

 

I need to get in the Cam installing business.

 

i wish i had the time-i spend too much time at work. i cant afford to have my truck out of commission for very long. my other ride only sees the road during summer.
