Default Buying a stock 5.3L what to look for?

I'm looking to purchase a stock Engine assembly from a salvage yard for about 500 bucks. I need to know what to look for before buying one. I know that gm uses the same 4.8/5.3 block, but i dont want to buy another 4.8. I want a 5.3 or evening better a 6.0L. Just dont want to get jipped at the place of purchase. please help!!

Pull a plug and look...4.8 pistons are flat-top,5.3 are dished.

Someone said a DOD 5.3 might have flat-tops,too.
