bore out 4.8???

3.904 is the most those 2 blocks can go (which is the bore on an LS1 5.7). Then you have to switch to a 6.0 block for a 4"
Just do a search for MAX BORE

ok, so if i do a 3.89x bore with the 4.8 crank and 5.7 pistons will it all work out?

if you bore the block out to 3.905", which is generally regarded as the max bore for these blocks as viciousknid pointed out, and drop in the 4.8L crank, which has a 3.26" stroke, you'd end up with a 312ci engine. Sure it'd be a quick little revver with a larger bore for better breathing, but if you're going through all this machine work, why not stick in the standard 3.62" stroke crank so you can have an iron block LS1?
The only reason I'd ever stick with the short stroke of the 4.8 after doing machine work is with a 6.0 block to make a high revver that can utilize the L92 top-end. And even that is if I get bored with life and have too much money to play with.

Hell, try it with a 3.898 (stock LS1 bore), or 3.905 if the block proves to withstand that bore (get forged pistons, shoot for compression ratio in the 10's- read below to see why), and use the 4.8 crank. Use a set of ARP rod bolts and have the assembly balanced. Then stick a nice set of heads on there that are designed for this medium size bore, don't go to crazy on the valve sizes. That'll be a nice little motor for sure. Then, if you get the itch to have more power down the road, you'll have a motor thats ready for boost. Turbo / Super charge at will! Then you'll be getting the decent fuel mileage that a smaller displacement will offer when cruising around normally, and have a nice breathing power house that will rev to the moon! Good luck,
