Default Air Filter Assembly

Who makes the best air filter assembly for a 95 Chevrolet with a throttlebody? I wouldn't have believed it, but my stock air filter assembly minus the baffle and tied straight into the fender well lost 26 HP on the chasis dyno <img border="0" alt="[barf]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_barf.gif" />
Anybody have any Dyno results?

All you removed was the big black silencer that's sits between the fender and the air cleaner? And you lost 26hp? I really can't imaging that, not that I doubt you but doesn't really make sense. All it does is silence the air intake noise, and create alot of turbulance which you would think would hurt performance. I had a 95 truck with the TBI motor and that's one of the first things I did was pop in a K&N filter and remove the silencer, I replaced the silencer with a 4" straight piece of tubing. doing that really helped the truck performance. I then added Turbo Cities "air flow enhancer" and TB injector spacer. All this really helped. I tried an open element air filter and a dual snorkel ram air intake from Air Inlet systems. Neither performed as well as the OEM intake with the modifications I made. I also notched the top of the passenger side turn signal to allow more air to pass by it, the air inlet scoop is behind it. I also smoothed out the air deflector that's in the fender, it directs air towards the air intake. It didn't sit flat against the fender allowing alot of air to get by, I flattened it out and used aluminum tape to seal the hole area, making all the air that entered the fender go into the air cleaner intake. I did like the looks of the Volant system too but never bought one.

95 Truck.....

I think most of the guys get the best flow with the K&N and an open element, but I'm not really sure.

Jim, Thanks for the feedback. The truck was dynoed with no aircleaner. We then put the factory aircleaner assembly back on with just a straight plastic pipe going to the inner fender (the factory spot) without the silencer and we lost 26 hp compared to no air cleaner at all. I know, hard to believe! Needless to say I am looking for a good setup now.

OH, I see. You had the TB just open, no air cleaner at all. OK! Then lost 26 hp when you put the factory air cleaner on minus the silencer, that really does show how bad the stock air cleaner flows. All the modifications I mentioned in my other post did help, I guess they got back some of that lost 26 hp. If that's the case, just get an open 14" round air cleaner and pop in a K&N filter. That should flow almost as well as when you had no air cleaner.

I just had another idea. Being the TBI is the size of a carb, you could do one other thing I thought about doing before I sold my truck. Get as factory dual snorkel air cleaner that came on Camaro's and Firebird's from about 83-85, they had the 305 H.O. engine and they came with a dual snorkel air cleaner from the factory. I believe the Monte Carlo SS's from that time had it too, they also came with the 305 H.O. engine. It should fit on the TBI unit! You could run the passenger side duct into the factory fender opening and the other to the drivers side head light. There's a 4" round opening behind the head light that would hold the duct in place. You would be making a ram-air set, pulling in colder air from outside the truck instead of the hot air the open element air cleaner would pulling in. I've seen them on E-bay, you could then get K&N filter for that year Camaro and pop it in the air cleaner. They also make chrome lids for them, it would look good and be real functional. Just a thought!

I would stick one of these on it:

I appreciate any and all feedback guys. Sorry for the confusion Jim, I guess the first time I didn't really explain myself. I know the throttlebody trucks never were much in the performance arena like the new LS1 trucks. I was hoping that somebody did actually come up with a good Ram Air unit for them. The throttle body is simply an air valve now as I it has the Edelbrock Multipoint fuel injection on it.
