The blocks are the same. The cranks and heads are whats different. Just get an 01 or newer if your planning on using the stock crank. Heads were Iron and cranks were longer on the 99's and some 2000's.

LQ4 has Iron Heads from years 1999-2000,LQ4 has Aluminum Heads from years 2001+, and the LQ9 has Aluminum Heads from 2002+ and has flow characteristics of a LS6. (Chevy LS1/LS6 Performance Page 64-65)

I was pretty much just talkin about a block, cause when i do a swap, i want to do it once...and do it right, so i will be buiding a motor pretty much from the block up.

When you buy a new block from GM does it come with mains and main bolts all line honed? Are the cyl walls honed and ready to go at 4.000"? **** for $500 that's worth buying a new one rather buying used and getting machined.
