07 Classic 4.8 2wd
#1
Hey everyone I have a 2007 Silverado classic with a 4.8l as a daily driver but I also would like to go to the drag strip and want to get my truck cammed, what's a good cam that I can use for both street and strip use that adds a decent amount of power?

Get a live tune. I see you are in CA, be careful with cam choice unless you have a friend at the inspection station. (Emissions testing)
What gears do you have? Most of these trucks are way under geared. I suggest a gear swap and posi before a cam.

That truck should have a G80/ 3:23-3:42 gears in it. I wouldn't just run out and get gears right away...I would spend my money in a different direction if I had to do it again. My truck was a 00/4.8/RWD. I put 456 gears and a eaton posi(had it laying around) The truck wasn't as fun to drive as it was when I got the cam/stall/headers/intake. If I were to do it again I would invest my money on headers cam and a stall and leave whatever gears It had in it alone. I would do the rear last, not do the rear first and the engine last that's just my two cents. Even a stall alone makes a stock truck feel more exciting, and is one of the best bangs for the buck. I like Texas speed cams as my personal choice. But there is comp cams, although they did have an issue with poor lobe designs where they were wiping out, I think they got that all squared away now. I believe Brian Tooley sells cams, mast motor sports, isky, trick flow, GM Performance Parts. There is a big list to choose from. And don't waste your money on a hand held tuner, a live tune is hands down best way to extract the most HP from the motor

My current truck has 3.42s and is a slug. I'd want 4.10s minimum if I kept the 4.8L. A good friend of mine has a newer truck with a 4.8 and 3.23s, it's gutless as well. Converter is a great mod, but gears help get a heavy vehicle moving. I hate how my truck has to downshift on a steep grade to maintain speed.
My suggestion, try to drive a truck with just gears - no converter. And a truck with just a converter and stock gears. Whatever you like best, go with.

This is my .02 I had a 2012 4.8 crew 2wd that I bought brand new. The absolute weakest truck I ever sat in! I changed the gears to 3:73s and it killed my mpgs! I wish I'd went with a tune to do away with the torque management. I guess GM sets it like this to keep the burnt trans warranties down. I sold that truck and now have a rcsb 04 with 4.8 and 3:42s. Night and day difference with no mods. Get more air in and then get it out. Intake, cam, headers exhaust, stall is the way I'm going to go. Hope this helped
