Older 4l80e Swap Questions
Just picked up an older 4l80e core for a great price. It is missing the converter, but I plan on having it rebuilt and putting a higher stall in it. From everything I've gathered, it is a 91-94 trans (missing the top bolt hole) and it seems it also did not have a neutral safety switch on it. This is going behind a 6.0 swapped k10 truck and eventually I will get an np241 for it as well. Some questions I have:
-How can I adapt a NSS to this trans if it did not already have one (see pics below)? Is it as simple as installing the longer shift shaft? Any other parts or procedures required for this, etc?
-Would it be best to have the NSS on the trans, or would it be better/easier to put it on the column?
-Any other wiring differences or things I need to be thinking about to run this behind a 6.0? Any special instruction to give to the shop who will be rebuilding?
-Can you recommend a converter for this trans? Running a 222/232 cam (summit 8713r1), 4.88 gears, 37 inch tires. Some have recommended a 3000 stall, Summit's page does not specify because it depends on the application. What would be a good brand to use without breaking the bank? I've heard decent things about Edge Converters - anyone use one of these?
Thanks in advance

That transmission will need the updated valvebody and wiring harness to match for a newer PCM to control it. Trans builder should know what you need if you tell them you need it to work for a 2002 truck.
For the right converter i would call Circle D. Answer all their questions and you will get what you need. Off the shelf converters that state they have a "3000 Stall" depends on Engine Power, Final Gear ratio, and weight of vehicle. Too tight of a converter will make that miserable having 4.88s and 37s in a 6000# truck with that size cam.

What is actual date on the driver driver side tag?
I believe any 94+ unit will work. 91-93 did have different valve body...
I'm currently building a 95 unit for my brother's '90 cc1500. He's swapping in a LQ4. Unit is a 95 and it does have a NSS switch.
Previously rebuilt 95 unit did not have a NSS switch, but had the bosses and threaded holes for one. Just have to change the shift shaft. That's pretty straightforward.

You dont "need" a NSS but it would be easier to mount one on the column shifter. The newer Park/Neutral saftey switch bolts to the case and yours being an older case doesnt have the threaded bosses.

Regarding that cover, the some of earlier models had a sheet metal cover and some had a cast aluminum cover. At some point they all went to a cast aluminum over with little ribs.
If you could find a junkyard cast aluminum cover, that's probably the cheapest option. New covers are expensive.
Actually, my 99 Silverado that got an 4L80e swap is running without that cover...doh!
