Default Need help identifying type of trans in a 99 1500 4x4

Hey guys. I need a little help here. I'm a car guy and don't know much about what the trucks came with. Guy at my work would like some help with a tranny job but it would be nice to know what the truck has in it before I can let him know. He has a 99 silverado 1500 extended cab 4x4. The problem is that it's the older (classic) body style. Did these come with a 4.8/5.3 as well? And if so, he believes it's the bigger motor (5.3) so which transmission would be in there?

Also, for anyone thats replaced a tranny, how big of a job is this? I've done a few trannys in camaros and one in a wrangler and I can't imagine this being too difficult because of all the room under there. Any computer re-flashes necesary with putting in a replacement tranny?

Anyways, thanks in advance for the help.

older style would be a 5.7 350 vortec with 4l60e trans. and it's an easy job.

edit. what do you mean older style? like it looks like the truck in my sig? if so it's a 4.8 or 5.3, same trans.

By older style I mean it looks like a 97 but it's a 99. And by what your saying, if it looks like the older, more squared body, it has a 5.7 vortec instead of the 5.3? Yet the 5.3 was available in 99 in the body style that is similiar to yours? GM is so strange. I don't get why they'd have a 5.3 and 5.7 totally different engines available for the same year, lol. I was kind of figuring it was a 4l60 though so that helps.

the 5.7 was still available until 2000 in the 2500+ trucks I think. The 99 silverados were the only ones with the 5.3, the 99 suburbans and tahoes were still 5.7

Yea it was a crossover year I guess. They also made 2000 model trucks 2500 and 3500 that were the square body... But if his is a square body extended cab it's more then likely a 5.7 350, but it could have the smaller 305 too...lol

99 was a crossover year. the tooling for the new silverados was just getting under way. they were finishing up the old tooling as well so some plants were making classics with the 5.0/5.7 motors and some were makin the new bodystyle with the 4.8/5.3 motors. both had 4l60e trannys with minor differences. if you done a tranny swap before, then your gonna be fine. the 2500/3500 trucks and suvs didnt change over for another year til the new silverados were in full swing. gm has gotten much better at swapping over body styles even though they did the silverado the same in 07 -- classic/nnbs in same model year. lol

He may have even given me the wrong year. I know he just got the truck so it could be a 98 I guess. Now that I know it's either a 5.7 or 5.0 I should be ok. Anybody know what years have a direct bolt in transmission? I already did a search and found out I can't use a 2wd tranny in a 4x4 truck, but I'm guessing 96-98/99 4x4's should all have the same transmission for the mmost part?

And thanks a bunch for the help guys.
