Default Manual trans guys!

I currently have the stock nv3500 and its junk but, I can't bring myself to do the much loved 4L80e swap. I know most manual guys run the T56 but I want to stay 4x4. I have done as much research as I can and really all I have found is the guy with the avalanche that did the ZF6 swap. Obviously theres other options such as the nv4500 but thats all i really know of.

I really like the idea of having somthing way stronger then I should ever need. But I want somthing I can slam 1-2-3 at the strip without grinding or not engaging.

Sooo.....

What do you guys run?

Out of all 3 which is the smoothest shifting?

You're comparing truck trans to car trans

Truck trans will never shift like a car trans....with said you're in a battle mostly alone with a lot of heartache ahead

Check out my thread and you may change your mind about doing the 80e swap.......

https://www.performancetrucks.net/fo...egrets-538179/

As far as I have been able to tell you want the T56 for lighter, faster shifts but it was designed for a car not a heavy truck. You can have some luck by having them built and running a stronger clutch but this costs much more than doing the 80e swap or even getting an 80e built.

Just put an auto in with a manual valve body. It's really the best we can do.

I have been watching the T56 swao regrets thread and after reading George C's experiances I certinally dont want one. But the T56 GRWV is much much less then that of the ZF6 and that seems to be the real killer of those trans.

I also understand I am talking about a truck transmission and it will never shift as nicely as my audi. On the other hand I feel a new or rebuilt ZF6 or NV4500 should shift much better then my old tired NV3500. I have been reading alot of stuff on diesel performance forums of people trashing their ZF6 pushing over 70ohp/1200tq they rarely have the same problems I have wih my S10 trans such as....
-Grinding getting into second
-Locking out of third
-Alot of noise even not in gear at idle
-The obvious can't handle big power

As far as an 80E with manual valve body I havent really looked into it much but Since the truck isnt just a track toy I would like to stay clutch and stick hahaha.

Thank you for all the input hopefully this isnt the start of a lonely battle of heart break

I was in a similar position as you, but I had an auto. I blew up my 4l60e and I decided to swap a nv4500 into my 1500 with 5.3. I bought a nice heavy duty clutch set up and a hurst short throw. I think its a great, underrated trans. My swap is not complete yet, but I have driven a dodge with an nv4500 and it shifts pretty nice. Id go nv4500 if I were you. Its a strong trans and manuals are a lot simpler and less expensive to work with than autos

Finally! Someone that understands the struggles haha. I think I am going to spend some time at dealerships looking for somthing with a nv4500 and a zf6 just so I can test drive and see what I like. I really like the ratios and the extra gear and higher power rating of the Zf6 but they are alot more expensive and way bigger.
