I got quoted "about $500" from a reputable trans shop in the Houston area to install my TC. Is this a fair price? I was kinda thinking it would take about 3-4 hrs labor for the swap. If I had a lift, I would attempt it myself. If I have a trans shop do it, I may as well have them install the HD2 shift kit at the same time.

So what would be a fair, average price to install the converter

 

I've heard $400 around here at an independent shop.

I actually just did a converter swap here on my back in the parking lot with a fully wet transmission (no drain plug arrg) 260 lbs. All I was armed with was a floor jack, a wooden toilet seat to place under the trans and hand tools. I got it done, but damn, I wouldn't do that again if someone paid me. I think $500 would be fair.

 

Its about that everywhere...call some small backyard type shops...they will usually do it for 2-300

 

I think I'll have the guy who did my truetrac & gears (for $250) do it. He told me to check back with him later this week on the price because he wants to check with his buddy that does a lot of transmission work.

 

dang.i guess prices are alot higher there,then here.most ppl around here charge 200.labor guide calls for 4 hrs for a 2wd drive trans but you can do it less than 2 hrs if using a lift and got air tools

 

2wd 30-45 mins max to drop the tranny dude and thats taking your time. 2-4 hrs is just crazy.

 

I did mine in my driveway with a cordless impact in about 3 hrs. I would say 3-4 hrs at whatever their labor rate is would be fair. Definetly dont want them rushing through it...

Well, I'm actually in MS, but got the quote from a transmission shop that goes by the same name as the brand TC I have.

I did my 4x4 trans swap on my back in the parking lot of the apartment complex where I used to live, rolled my air compressor out there and everything...I was moving in a few months so I didn't care, but the neighbors were actually cool as the used to see me working out there quite a bit, and I was always made nice small talk with them. I ended up friends with one neighbor who let me run an extension chord from his apartment to my compressor.

I bought one of those transmission adapters that goes on your floor jack but it wouldn't attach properly, so I ended up using the floor jack with a square piece of plywood on it and it worked flawlessly...although I did catch the bellhousing in the face at one point when the trans shifted, but I was OK, I'm still pretty

Since I'm 4wd I had a friend to help me, mainly for the transfer case, but if I were pulling a 2wd I wouldn't hesitate to do it alone (as I have in the past)...although it is always good to have a helper there just in case
