Default Gov-Loc or Tru Trac on snow and ice

Have 92 1/2 ton 4X4 pickup. Currently has an open carrier in the rear. Was wondering what carrier is better on snow and ice. The truck is something to get me back and forth to work in the winter.

If you're not going to do any drag racing in the summer with it, then go with the gov lok by all means. It will outperform any torsen style differential by leaps and bounds on snow and ice. True tracs work off the torque applied to the right rear wheel, that torque amount is multiplied by the bias (usually 1.5) to the left rear. If you have ZERO traction on the right rear, 1.5 times 0 equals what? ZERO. The left rear won't spin and you have to apply the emergency brake to simulate traction. The gov lok will do just the opposite. IT LOCKS when it's supposed to.

Thanks for the info. There will not be any racing of any kind, its just a pile of crap to get me to work in the winter.

Will look for a gov-lock.

so a Gov-bomb would be considered reliable on a daily driven truck? I've passed up a few cheap G80 takeouts due to the bad rap they recieved.

Where did you get that right wheel info? Torsens work on a torque bias regardless of which wheel has more traction. Any amount of torque delivered to the differential that exceeds the static friction of the tires on ice is going to cause them both to spin, torsen or locker. The torsen is still on the same bias, but since the amount of torque delivered to the ground is so much smaller, the TBR multiplies a much smaller number. Regardless of the differential...a touch too much throttle, and you're spinning already.

They hold up well if its a pretty stock truck with 16" or 17" rims. 20"s can tweek them. Mines done. It hasn't locked for almost 100,000mi now. When I get around to changing it out im going with a tru trac but in FL we dont see snow and ice.

I had a G80 in my truck and swapped it for a True Trac. I actually like the TT better. With the G80, yes it locks, however it unlocks at 30mph or so. In the snow it's really easy to get the wheels spinning past 30mph. I found it would constantly lock and unlock, lock and unlock, causing the rear end to swing out some when it was locked, then come back straight when it unlocked and was 1 wheel peel.

I like the TT better because it's predictable. I know when it will spin both wheels and slide the rear end out.

So if you are on snow or ice and give enough throttle to spin the tires will both spin or just one? Will it unlock if you slide side to side?
