Looks like arduino stuff. There are some nice kits out there and a number of cheap LCDs to choose from. Programming isn't hard and there is a ton of info and examples to use. Its all C/C++

I'm using one of my own circuit boards to control the OLED, but you could do the same thing with something like an Arduino. Would take some learning though. These little guys come in white, blue or yellow/blue split.

Here's a vid with it wired up to the PNP switch(only 5 wires required for gear position indication). I also updated the PNP pinout diagram in both threads.
