4l80 wot 2-3 shift with tcc locked
#1
I have a jakes built 80 with a billet input and d3 brake. Converter is a circle d triple disc and its a little too loose and feels like I'm blowing through it pretty good. I calculated slip at 28% at the 1/8 and 19% at the 1/4. When I lock the converter at around 100mph in 3rd the truck pulls like a freight train. I have locked it at wot in 2nd also and it pulls really hard but I have never let it shift while locked at wot. Anyone done this before? I feel like this is exactly what the truck needs for a 9 second pass but am scared of breaking the trans. The truck is a 6.0 s480 96mm on e85 at 18lbs. It absolutely freight trains with the converter locked but the shift scares me lol. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

You seem to know the risks...I wouldn't do it personally, I would have the converter fixed so you aren't blowing through it so there would be no need to lock it then.

That's what I thought I would hear, I just needed to hear it from someone else I guess. Being that it's race truck season, I didn't want to have the truck be down for a few weeks waiting on a converter. Do I send the circle d back for a restall or sent in the 10" ptc that I have and get it built for my truck?
Thanks for the response

When this whole ls truck game started, I remember watching vids of people trying different shift strategies. I was like, what the **** the first time I heard one go down, shift to second, lock up, unlock, shift to 3, lock up...........
I never locked mine in 2nd as procharged deals don't typically like locking the converter like a turbo truck. However, I did some roll racing for a while when my truck was around 550-600 hp to the tire. There where several times I did the 3-4 shift with the converter locked. I was running an FLT stage 4 4l80e and a Precision Vigilante 3 disk converter. I never had issues with the converter and never broke any hard parts in the trans but it did wipe out clutch packs.
I say do it, then fix whatever it breaks. If it shows promise in your combo, beef up the part that breaks. I personally like the combo of a loose converter with lockup.......however I've never really been heavily involved with turbo trucks. I'm one of those "procharger cult" guys.
